The quilter selected for our May showcase is Stella Nelson. An excellent quilter and conversationalist, Stella is also one of the luckiest people you could meet, winning nearly every contest and drawing that she enters. We always look forward to seeing all of the new quilts that she's working on.

1.  How did you get started in quilting?

I made my first quilt with my grandma when I was about 8 years old. It was a doll quilt made from a piece of flannel with scrap fabric basted on it and with hand stitched edges.

I really got started sewing in High School. Since I'd never had a sewing machine, I was glad there were several machines at the school. We started making wearables (first clothing) and then learned to crochet and quilt. As soon as we started learning to make quilts, I made baby quilts for my friends that had babies and tied most of them by hand.

2.  What is one quilting notion that you can’t do without?

I have so many to choose from... I'd have to say my cutting mat, ruler, and rotary cutter are the most helpful. I always have them ready for the next project I'm thinking about starting.

3.  If it’s possible to choose just one, what is your favorite quilt that you’ve made?

I love so many of my quilts! But, if I had to choose one of them as my favorite today, it would be either my Bargello Quilt or my Tiger Wall Hanging.

4.    What do you do with your quilts?

I enjoy all of my quilts. So, I use my quilt ladder to display a different one each month. I also use the wall in my entry way to display seasonal quilts. Whether it's for babies or other occasions, it's always a special treat to make quilts for family and friends.

5.  Have you ever received a quilt as a gift? If so, please share a bit about the experience.

I was given a quilt by the Orland Quilt Guild in 1993 when we were moving out of state. It was a signed Teacup Quilt that I still have. I love it for all its good memories. My New Jersey Quilt Guild (of which I have been a member since 1997) also gave me Sun Bonnet Sue Blocks when we left New Jersey. They’re very special to me.

6.  What type of quilting do you most enjoy?

I am a traditional quilter, so I do a lot of pieced quilts and make lots of blocks. I enjoy making quilts with Secondary patterns. I like working with bright colors and interesting pieces of fabric that I find in my “stash.” Recently, a friend introduced me to making postage stamp quilts. I think I’m addicted to it now! I thoroughly enjoy the process of turning pieces of fabric into nice quilts for everyone to see.

7.  We would love to include some personal details about you (anything you’d like to share) such as your profession, interests outside of quilting, future plans, etc.

I enjoy spending time with my family. I’ve recently become a grandmother and frequent flyer, traveling to Kansas often to see my new grandbaby. I’m an active participant in Annie’s Star Quilt Guild and make a lot of community service quilts. I also work part-time as a beautician at Windsor Chico Creek Care & Rehab.
