The quilter selected for our June showcase is Phoebe Winter.
Both a prolific and multi-talented quilter, Phoebe exudes knowledge in all aspects of quilting.

1. How did you get started in quilting?

About 40 years ago, I had cut up some old polyester clothes into 2 ½” patches. Not having a pattern, I laid the colors in a diagonal line. I used a sheet as a backing & polyester batting. I tied the quilt and made a 2nd one to use all of the squares. They kept us warm during the winter months!!

2.  What is one quilting notion that you can’t do without?

My rotary cutter, mats, and rulers. It definitely beats using scissors & cardboard for makeshift templates for pattern shapes.

3.  If you’re willing, please share a funny quilting experience that taught you a memorable lesson.

I had spent a year hand embroidering gingham fabrics with a “chicken scratch” pattern. I pieced them together to make a quilt that I quilted by hand. When I was done, instead of my friends praising me for all of the hand embroidery, they said the embroidery stitches were toenail catchers.

4.  What do you do with your quilts?

I give quilts away to family and friends. Now, most are piled in my rocking chair awaiting new families. I also donate quilts to ASQG community service & fire victims.

5.  Have you ever received a quilt as a gift? If so, please share a bit about the experience.

I got a small wall hanging from a SECRET pal in the quilt guild. I was touched.

6.  What type of quilting do you most enjoy?

I enjoy making quilts from “scrap” fabric.

7.  We would love to include some personal details about you (anything you’d like to share) such as your profession, interests outside of quilting, future plans, etc.

I worked as a registered nurse for 42 years. I’m the mother of 5 children ( 1 died as an infant). I started quilting in 1989, after moving from Modoc County to Chico. I joined Annie’s Star Quilt Guild to meet like minded people. I enjoy a weekly small group who have been meeting for 30+ years. I enjoyed babysitting local grandchildren when they were infants & pre-schoolers. They are now young adults.
