The quilter selected for our November showcase is customer Pearl Baugher. Knowledgeable and talented, this prolific quilter is constantly creating beautiful projects. We're always delighted to see Pearl and what she's made. Quite simply, Pearl is a treasure!

1.   How did you get started in quilting?

My mother was a quilter, as most women were in the 1930s. The first quilt that I completed was in 1974 for my granddaughter’s first birthday. It was a quilt with puppies on it that I had hand quilted. Sadly, my granddaughter lost it in the Paradise fire.

2.   What is one quilting notion that you can’t do without?

I really depend on my rotary cutter and rulers.

3.  If it’s possible to choose just one, what is your favorite quilt that you’ve made?

My most memorable quilt is my “55 Year Quilt.” It's a quilt that I began making in my junior year of high school in 1950 at Prosser High School in Prosser, Washington. My mother subscribed to a craft magazine called Sewing Basket. Each month, they offered an embroidery design and my mother suggested that I embroider these designs. After embroidering all 12 blocks, I sewed the designs together.

The quilt top laid in my cedar chest until 2005 when I finally had it quilted by Shelly Etzler at The Sewing Studio in Durham, California. The quilt was awarded “Best in Show” at the Silver Dollar Fair.

4.   What do you do with your quilts?

I gift my quilts to family and friends. Recently, a lady approached me wanting to purchase one of my quilts. What an honor!

5.   What type of quilting do you most enjoy?

I love creating my own designs and experimenting with color combos. I have won 2 Best in Show ribbons, 13 Blue ribbons, 7 Second place ribbons, and 3 Third place ribbons. I entered 28 quilts in the Silver Dollar Fair between 2005 and 2015. One year I made 50 quilts! As you can tell, quilting is my passion.

6.   We would love to include some personal details about you (anything you’d like to share) such as your profession, interests outside of quilting, future plans, etc.

I’m 91 years old. I retired from CUSD where I was the only Buyer (Purchasing Agent). I became a pilot at 50 years old. My husband, John, and I flew everywhere in our plane. Lots of fun memories.
