Kathy is one of the most fantastic people you could ever have the pleasure of knowing!
Extremely kind, generous, talented, and fun, Kathy is truly a gosh darn delight!
1. How did you get started in quilting?
In 1972, my aunt and uncle gave me a book called “Quilts and Coverlets: A Contemporary Approach” written by Jean Ray Laury. The author included a great deal of appliqué in her work. This would become the inspiration for my first quilt, which I made in 1984 for our first child, our son, Erik.

2. What is one quilting notion that you can’t do without?
Scissors. I use them multiple times a day. I have 15 pairs just for fabric!
3. If you’re willing, please share a funny quilting experience that taught you a memorable lesson.
I have a friend who discovered her brother was using the quilt that she made for him as a paint drop. Now, mind you, this quilter is extremely talented.
Another friend discovered that the beautiful quilt she made for a wedding present was being used as a dog bed. She got it back and gave them a toaster instead.
During a class I was taking at Cathy's/Honey Run, the teacher told us that when deciding who should receive a quilt we've made, we have to determine if the person is “quilt worthy.” I thought it was funny (and true) never having heard that term before.
4. If it’s possible to choose just one, what is your favorite quilt that you’ve made?
The Raven by Blackbird Designs because I'm fascinated with crows and ravens.
5. What do you do with your quilts?
I give most of them away.
6. Have you ever received a quilt as a gift? If so, please share a bit about the experience.
Yes. I gave a friend some fabric thinking she would make a quilt and give it to her grandchild. But, she gave it to me! It was wonderful.
7. What type of quilting do you most enjoy?
I enjoy both paper piecing and hand appliqué because they combine different aspects of quilting and crafting!
8. We would love to include some personal details about you (anything you’d like to share) such as your profession, interests outside of quilting, future plans, etc.
I am retired and my interests, outside of quilting, are mostly mosaicing, embroidery with floss, silk ribbon embroidery, cross stitch, and cooking. Occasionally, I’ll also plant a flower or two. My future plan is to work hard to use what I have collected since my children do not sew.
