The quilter selected for our August showcase is Glynna McClellan. Glynna is a very talented and skilled quilter. Though every quilt she makes is different, they all share one important component: LOVE.
1. How did you get started in quilting?
I've been sewing since I was a teenager. While living in Missouri for a short time, I took a quilt class and made a sampler quilt. I also took a few classes at Honey Run Quilters when they were on the Esplanade. I've now been quilting for 40 years.
2. What is one quilting notion that you can’t do without?
I really like my rotary cutter and rulers when hand quilting. I really like my finger sleeve as well.
3. If you’re willing, please share a funny quilting experience that taught you a memorable lesson.
Years ago, before I had actually learned how to quilt, I gathered up all of the scraps I had. I then cut them into 3 inch squares and sewed them in rows that didn't match. Looking at the all of the different fabrics sewn together was eye opening. It taught me that there are some materials that do not belong in a quilt.
4. If it’s possible to choose just one, what is your favorite quilt that you’ve made?
I'm proud of all of the quilts I have made. But, there is one that is extra special. After my mom passed away, I made a small wall hanging with three ladies on it. They represent my mom, my sister and myself. I always think of them when I look at it.
5. What do you do with your quilts?
I give a lot of my quilts to family and friends. But, I also keep a lot of them... actually MOST of them. Hahahaha!
6. Have you ever received a quilt as a gift? If so, please share a bit about the experience.
Yes, I have received a quilt as a gift. It's a quilt that my mom made using fabrics that she knew that I liked. It means alot because it was made by my mom especially for me.
7. What type of quilting do you most enjoy?
I like doing needle turn applique. I also like both traditional quilt piecing and paper piecing. Additionally, I also hand quilt ALL of my quilts.
8. We would love to include some personal details about you (anything you’d like to share) such as your profession, interests outside of quilting, future plans, etc.
Over the years, I worked in many office-type jobs. However, I'm retired now. I have 3 children, 2 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and 2 grandpups :)
I've spent the majority of my life in Chico. My interests besides quilting are embroidery, cross stitch, and crochet. I also like to read a lot.
